Santa Fe Weekend: High Desert Gardens & Adobe Retreats
Santa Fe: High Desert Gardens & Adobe Retreats
Santa Fe sits at 7,000 feet, wrapped in piñon pine and sage, where the sky is enormous and the light is the color of raw honey in the late afternoon. It is a city that has always understood the garden as a spiritual act — from the ancient Pueblo terraced gardens to the walled courtyards spilling with lavender and hollyhocks you'll find tucked behind every adobe wall.
For gardeners, this is a city that teaches. The plant palette here — drought-adapted, high-altitude, with blazing summers and cold winters — is its own education in what tough beauty looks like.
Your Itinerary
Arrive and walk Canyon Road before dinner — 1.3 miles of galleries, walled gardens, and flowering courtyards that change seasonally. In late spring and summer, the hollyhocks are extraordinary.
- Check in, then walk the Plaza and get oriented
- Canyon Road afternoon walk — note the walled garden planting styles
- Dinner at The Shed or Café Pasqual's for classic New Mexican cuisine
- Evening stroll back via San Francisco Street
The Santa Fe Botanical Garden at Museum Hill is still growing into itself — but what's already there is beautiful: high-altitude New Mexican plants, a working oñate garden, and sweeping Sangre de Cristo views.
- Morning: Santa Fe Botanical Garden (allow 1.5–2 hours)
- Museum of International Folk Art is steps away — the garden courtyard alone is worth it
- Afternoon: spa at your hotel or explore the Railyard Arts District
- Farmers market at the Railyard (Saturday morning — plan accordingly)
Drive north to Abiquiú — O'Keeffe's legendary garden is one of the most beautiful private gardens in America. Tours must be booked far in advance but are worth every effort. Even the drive through the Chama River Valley is a study in high desert color.
- Georgia O'Keeffe Home & Studio tour, Abiquiú (book months ahead)
- Ghost Ranch after — O'Keeffe's painting subject, with hiking and views
- Return via Española; stop at El Paragua for a long, late lunch
- Sunset from the Bishop's Lodge garden terrace
A slow, beautiful final day. Morning soak at Ten Thousand Waves — a Japanese mountain spa carved into the hillside above Santa Fe. Then Rancho de las Golondrinas, a living history museum with heritage gardens that will make any plant lover weep with joy.
- Ten Thousand Waves — book a private tub for sunrise; magical
- Rancho de las Golondrinas living history museum & heritage gardens
- Late lunch at Tune-Up Café before heading to the airport
"Every walled garden in Santa Fe is a small world — a private conversation between stone, sky, and sage."
